Rabbi Raphael Encaoua (1848-1935) son of Mordekhaï is the descendant of an illustrious rabbinic lineage from Spain

when he decided to settle in Israel. In 1918, the French authorities of the Protectorate decided to reorganize rabbinic justice in Morocco and created a body
of appeal, the High Rabbinical Court over which Rabbi Raphael presided until his last day, August 2, 1935.

His aura as a holy man, his exceptional righteousness, his incomparable modesty, his open-mindedness and his love for others earned him the nickname of his
living the angel Raphael. More than 20,000 people attended his funeral, his tomb on which a mausoleum was built became a place of pilgrimage.
